Opengate began its work in Somers in 1969. Opengate was formed by a group of parents who were seeking solutions for care for their adult developmentally disabled children and finding none, created their own answer. These families, through their own vision of what their offspring needed, overcame bureaucracies and financial hurdles to forge that vision into the reality of group home care at Opengate. These were and are homes in every sense of the word; places where the respect, interest and safety of the individuals come first. Opengate provides trained and sensitive staff, led and supported by a dedicated set of parents and administration.
Opengate champions every consumer it serves as valued members of society, proudly advocating their rights to become part of the mainstream of society to their maximum capacity. Opengate offers individualized programs consisting of a variety of supports including life skills, language and communication, recreation, socialization and pre-academic training. We incorporate positive approaches to behavioral change and individuals receive continuous feedback on their progress.
We welcome the support of the community in encouraging inclusive community relations.
